The doctor who tended to Jimi Hendrix on the night he died in 1970 says it is "plausible" that the iconic guitarist was murdered.
John Bannister was speaking in relation to claims in a new book written by Hendrix's former roadie that his manager Mike Jeffery had had the star killed.
In his book 'Rock Roadie', James 'Tappy' Wright says that Jeffery admitted having Hendrix murdered shortly before he himself died in an aircraft accident.
He alleges that Jeffery hired a gang to break into Hendrix's Notting Hill hotel room and force sleeping pills and wine down his throat.
Bannister, who was the on-call registrar at the now defunct St Mary Abbots Hospital in Kensington on September 18, the day of Hendrix's death, has now backed up the roadie's theory, saying it: "sounded plausible because of the volume of wine" found in Hendrix's lungs and on his body.
"The amount of wine that was over him was just extraordinary. Not only was it saturated right through his hair and shirt but his lungs and stomach were absolutely full of wine. I have never seen so much wine," The Times reports Bannister as saying.
"We had a sucker that you put down into his trachea, the entrance to his lungs and to the whole of the back of his throat. We kept sucking him out and it kept surging and surging. He had already vomited up masses of red wine and I would have thought there was half a bottle of wine in his hair. He had really drowned in a massive amount of red wine."
Wright says that Jeffery told him that Hendrix was "worth more to him dead than alive", and had filed a $2m life insurance policy on the guitarist shortly before his death.

Dejé de seguir la actualidad musical a finales de los 70. Conocer, o sea tener algunos de sus discos o haberlos escuchado completos, no conozco ni a U2 ni a Bruce Springsteen, por poner dos ejemplos clamorosos, y si no fuera por lo que he oído por azar no sabría cómo suenan Oasis, Nirvana, Radiohead, etc. Es por ello que siempre agradezco que alguien me descubra a algún artista o algún disco que pueda ocupar un buen sitio en mi discoteca. Y, Charli, te agradezco un montonazo que me redescubrieras a Bob Dylan, del que apenas había escuchado algo posterior al Desire. ¡Tell Tale Signs me encanta de principio a fin! ¡Una joya! Y te digo lo mismo de John Mayer, del que ni siquiera había oído hablar... Bueno, como tú insinúas, ni yo ni la mayoría de gente en este país (inevitablemente me tragué algo del funeral, o lo que fuera eso, de Michael Jackson; pues bien, en ninguno de los dos periódicos que leí al día siguiente, y que citaban a casi todos los que participaron en el “evento”, se mencionaba a John Mayer). ¡Buenísimo el tío y buenísimos los dos discos que recomendabas!
(Curiosidad aparte: todavía me pregunto si el I don’t need no doctor que interpreta es el mismo que tocaban Humble Pie en el Fillmore.)
De ahí pasamos a su espléndida versión del Bold as love y de ahí a Jimi Hendrix. De todos los que en aquellos tiempos se fueron ¿prematuramente? siempre lo consideré la mayor pérdida: Por no poder ver su inevitable evolución y por la cantidad de nuevas joyas que su talento, junto a los avances técnicos que fueron apareciendo, nos habría ofrecido. O no. Pero escuchando a otros guitarristas a veces me preguntaba, ¿qué estaría haciendo Hendrix ahora?
Posdata vengativa: Ya sé que en estas páginas no se habla de política pero siempre he pensado que ciertos delitos no deberían prescribir. Lo digo por si fuera cierto lo del titular de la portada.
"I dont need no doctor" ignoro si es la que tocaban Humble pie en el Fillmore.De ellos recuerdo ese album y smoking.Con ese titulo hay un clasico de Ray Charles.no sé que estaría haciendo Hendrix si viviera.Era un guitarrista único con un estilo que ha influido en muchos guitarristas, incluso de estilos muy diferentes.Seguro que nos hubiera regalado alguna maravilla.
